Annas sent Jesus, bound, to Caiaphas, the high priest. And all the chief priests and elders and scribes came together in the house of Caiaphas.
Now the chief priests and the whole council looked for false witnesses against Jesus so that they could put him to death. Many false witnesses came, but none agreed, and they could find nothing wrong with Jesus.
One said:
Jesus said that he could destroy the temple of God that is made with hands, and build another not made with hands in three days.
But none of the witnesses agreed.
And finally the high priest stood up in the midst of Jesus and said to him:
Aren’t you going to answer any of the charges that these witnesses are bringing against you?
Jesus was silent and did not answer.
Again, the high priest asked him:
Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? I adjure you by the living God, tell us whether or not you are the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus said to the high priest:
You have said I am. Nevertheless I say to you, in the future you will see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
The high priest tore his clothes and said:
He has spoken blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have heard his blasphemy. What do you think?
The others answered:
He is worthy of death.
And they all condemned him to be worthy of death.
The men who held Jesus mocked him and beat him. And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and ask:
Who struck you?
They hit him with their hands, and did many other reviling things to him.
