Farewell Discourse to Disciples Part 3

Part 3c

“This is my commandment, love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

You are my friends if you do the things that I command you. I will no longer call you my servants, because a servant does not know what his Lord does. But I have called you friends, for all the things that I heard from the Father, I have revealed to you.

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and produce fruit, and that your fruit would last. Whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

All these things I command you to do, so that you will have love for one another. If the world hates you, know that it has also hated me before it hated you.

If you were of the world, the world would love you, because the world loves its own. But you are not of this world, for I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Remember the words that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his Lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have had no sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates me, hates the Father. This is happening so that the Scriptures will be fulfilled that say:

‘They hated me without cause.’

When the Comforter has come, whom I will send from the Father, that is, the Spirit of Truth, he will bear witness of me. You also will bear witness of me because you have been with me from the beginning.

I have spoken these things to you so that you do not stumble. They will persecute you, and the time is coming when they will kill you and think they are doing God a service.

They will do these things because they do not know the Father, or me. But I have told you these things so that you will remember them when I am gone.

I am going to go to be with the one who sent me. And none of you are asking me,

‘Where are you going?’

Because I have told you that I am leaving, you have become sorrowful.

But I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away. If I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you. But if I do go, I will send him to you.

When the Comforter comes, he will convict the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment, because they do not believe in me;

Of righteousness because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.

I have many more things to tell you, but you cannot understand them now.

But when the Holy Spirit comes, the Spirit of Truth, he will guide you in all truth.

He will not speak about himself, he will speak the things that he hears and will tell you things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
