While the group of women were gone to tell the disciples, some of the soldiers who had been guarding the tomb went to the chief priest and told them all the things that had happened.
After they were assembled and had considered the matter, the officials gave money to the soldiers and told them to report that the disciples of Jesus had stolen the body of Jesus while they slept. They said,
‘If news of this gets to the governor’s ear, we will persuade him to overlook the offense.’
They took the money and did as they were told. The report spread among the Jews and is still reported to this day.
